Pest Forecast for Miracle Mile, Mid-Wilshire

This August’s heat wave is driving two major pests into Miracle Mile homes: Argentine ants and German cockroaches. The ants, thriving in the dry conditions, are marching in from irrigated gardens along Wilshire Boulevard and the La Brea Tar Pits’ lush landscaping, seeking moisture and food. They exploit tiny cracks in the concrete slabs of 1920s Art Deco apartments and 1960s mid-century high-rises, trailing along plumbing lines into kitchens and bathrooms. Meanwhile, cockroaches are proliferating in the dense urban environment, especially in older buildings with shared attics and crawlspaces, where food waste and warmth abound. Look for ant trails on countertops or along baseboards, and for roach droppings (small, pepper-like specks) in cabinets, behind appliances, or in dark corners near water sources. Also check for roaches in the gaps around pipes under sinks, a common entry point in these older structures.
