This August, as temperatures hover in the 80s-90s with no rain, The Strand's beachfront homes are seeing a surge in two pests: subterranean termites and sand fleas. The dry heat drives termites deeper into the sandy soil, but the older wooden pilings and raised foundations of the original beach cottages—especially those near the Manhattan Beach Pier—provide ideal moisture-retaining wood that attracts them. Meanwhile, the constant ocean breeze and salt spray create a perfect microclimate for sand fleas, which thrive in the dry sand along the shoreline, particularly near the beach access points and the Strand's narrow strip where dunes meet the houses. With no standing water to dilute the salt, these pests are more active than usual, and the newer slab-built homes are not immune, as termites can enter through cracks in the concrete. Watch for mud tubes on foundation walls or wooden supports, and for sand fleas, look for small, jumping insects near doorways or in sandy crawlspaces, especially after sunset. If you notice unexplained wood damage, hollow-sounding beams, or itchy bites on your ankles, act quickly.
