This August's hot, dry spell is driving two major pests into Silver Strand homes: cockroaches and Argentine ants. The marina's restaurants and boats, combined with the dense residential layout, create ideal harborage for cockroaches, especially the German and oriental species. As temperatures climb into the 90s, these pests seek cooler, moist environments—often entering through gaps around beach-facing sliding doors or the crawl spaces beneath your mid-century modern or newer townhouse. The high water table and sandy soil exacerbate moisture issues in these crawl spaces, making them prime breeding grounds. Look for droppings that resemble coffee grounds, shed skins, or a musty odor near kitchens and bathrooms. Additionally, Argentine ants are marching in from the sandy, well-drained soil, exploiting cracks in slabs and foundations. They are attracted to the sugary residues left by outdoor dining near the beach and the marina's dumpsters. Watch for trails along baseboards, around windows, and on patio slabs. If you notice these signs, act quickly—these pests can quickly establish large colonies in the warm, dry conditions.
